Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach from Reykjavík: Is the Long Day Worth It?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read
Jökulsárlón is the most ambitious common day trip from Reykjavík. The lagoon and neighbouring Diamond Beach are extraordinary, but the cost is time: this is a long transport day along the South Coast, not a leisurely visit to every waterfall on the way.
What the booking buys
The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach tour is listed at 14 hours from €181.80 and has 4,021 reviews. It follows the South Coast and includes selected stops such as Seljalandsfoss, but the lagoon is the purpose of the day. Do not read the itinerary as a promise of long visits everywhere; weather, daylight and road conditions shape the final order.
At Jökulsárlón, ice breaks from Breiðamerkurjökull and drifts through the lagoon towards the sea. Across the road, pieces wash onto the black shore known as Diamond Beach. The quantity, size and position of ice change continuously, so photographs from another date are not a timetable.
Day trip or overnight?
Choose the day trip when Reykjavík is your fixed base and this is the one distant landscape you most want to see. An overnight South Coast itinerary is better if you want unhurried waterfalls, a glacier activity or flexibility around winter daylight.
The coach removes the burden of driving, which matters after a 14-hour day. It does not remove possible delays. Keep the evening empty, carry layers and food according to the stated inclusions, and avoid booking a tight airport connection after the scheduled return.
Our verdict
It is worth it for lagoon-first travellers who tolerate long coach journeys. For everyone else, the standard South Coast day gives more sightseeing per hour. Compare glacier excursions on our glacier tours page.
