Golden Circle from Reykjavík: Coach, Small Group or Lagoon Combination?
Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read
The Golden Circle is the easiest first day trip from Reykjavík: Þingvellir, the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss fit into one circular route without changing hotels. What changes between bookings is not the core scenery but the pace, vehicle and extra stop.
The three versions
A standard coach is the sensible choice for most first-time visitors. The Golden Circle full-day tour with Kerið Crater takes 7–8.5 hours and starts at €79. With 27,604 reviews, it has more than any other excursion on this site. Expect fixed stops and less flexibility, but a lower starting price than the small-group and lagoon versions.
Small-group trips cost more but reduce the time spent boarding and waiting. They suit travellers who want questions answered and a less anonymous day; they do not make Gullfoss or Strokkur quieter. A lagoon combination adds a soak, not more time at the three principal sights. The Golden Circle and Secret Lagoon tour lasts 10 hours and starts at €115.
What the day feels like
Þingvellir is the historical and geological stop, Strokkur is the short, theatrical one, and Gullfoss is the finale. Weather changes the order and access: icy paths can close while the attractions remain open. Waterproof outerwear matters more than an elaborate camera kit, especially in Gullfoss spray.
Our verdict
Choose the standard coach if you have one free day and want the classic circuit. Pay for a small group for the guide and pace, not for different landmarks. Add a lagoon only if bathing is a priority and you accept a long schedule. Compare the wider selection on our Golden Circle tours page.
