Glacier Hike or Ice Cave from Reykjavík: Season, Kit and Destination
Updated October 8, 2026 · 5 min read
“Glacier tour” covers two different experiences. A glacier hike teaches you to move on open ice with a guide and technical kit. An ice-cave trip is organised around a particular formation whose availability can change with season and conditions.
Where the tour goes
The South Coast glacier hike with waterfalls and black-sand beach combines a guided ice activity with a full sightseeing day from Reykjavík. It starts at €178.63, but price alone is a poor comparison: some include city transport and several coast stops, while others begin at the glacier.
Read the departure point and activity duration separately. A long Reykjavík day may contain a relatively short time on the ice. A meeting-point tour can devote more of its schedule to the glacier but requires you to reach it independently.
Season, equipment and limits
Operators provide essential technical equipment such as crampons, helmet and harness where required. You still need the stated footwear and weatherproof clothing. Ordinary sightseeing footwear is not automatically suitable.
Ice caves are dynamic. A title or photograph does not guarantee the same chamber, colour or route on your date. Glacier hikes also change with weather and surface conditions. Check age, fitness, footwear and medical restrictions on the exact booking page; never borrow a limit from a different operator.
Our verdict
Choose a glacier hike for the activity itself and an ice-cave tour for a seasonal formation, accepting more uncertainty. From Reykjavík, the combined South Coast format is efficient but long. Compare current glacier tours from Reykjavík.
