Hiring a Car in Reykjavík: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Extras Mean?

Compare the amount you could actually have to provide, not just the daily price. Before booking, find the excess for each damage category, the deposit or card hold, accepted payment cards, included CDW, fuel policy and fees for an additional driver. In Iceland, also read whether gravel, sand and ash damage sit inside or outside the standard protection. If any amount is missing, ask the rental company in writing; do not assume that “full protection” means a zero liability.

Excess and deposit are different

The excess is the part of a covered loss for which the renter may remain responsible under the rental terms. The deposit is money blocked or collected to secure obligations such as damage, fuel or charges. They can be different amounts, and buying extra protection does not automatically remove every card hold.

Look for separate treatment of bodywork, tyres, wheels, glass, underbody and towing. Icelandic marketing often highlights gravel or sand-and-ash protection because those hazards do not fit neatly into a generic collision label. The policy wording, exclusions and selected vehicle decide what applies. A friendly counter explanation is not a substitute for the written agreement.

What CDW does — and does not say

CDW means collision damage waiver. It usually limits liability for specified collision damage rather than turning the rental into an all-risk product. “Included CDW” therefore answers only the first question. You still need its excess, exclusions and the conduct that can invalidate cover.

A broker protection product and the rental company’s waiver may work differently. One may reduce the amount at source; another may require you to pay the supplier and claim reimbursement later. Check who handles the claim, which documents are required and whether a deposit still applies. Do not buy a desk upgrade merely because the salesperson says the online cover is “not valid”; compare that statement with your voucher and policy.

The extras that change the total

Fuel policy matters because “full to full” requires you to return the same level, while other arrangements can include service charges. Confirm the rules for an additional driver, late arrival, one-way return and out-of-hours collection. Minimum age and young-driver conditions vary by supplier and vehicle group, so the exact booking page is the only safe place for them.

Winter tyres, vehicle suitability and permission for particular roads are separate from insurance. A protection package cannot make a prohibited road permitted. If your route includes an F-road, verify both the vehicle requirement and the rental contract; do not infer permission from four-wheel drive alone.

A five-minute check before paying

Open the rental conditions and write down: supplier, vehicle class, deposit, excess, card type, named-driver rules, fuel policy and exclusions. At collection, photograph the vehicle and make sure existing damage appears on the handover record. Keep the agreement and fuel receipt until the deposit is released.

Clear recommendation

Choose the offer whose worst plausible payment you understand and can accommodate, even if its daily rate is not the lowest. An unexplained deposit or excess is not a small-print nuisance; it is a reason to select a clearer offer or obtain a written answer before booking.
